Optimization of a packet video receiver under different levels of delay jitter: an analytical approach

چکیده
This paper studies the problem of analyzing and designing optimal playout adaptation policies for packet video receivers (PVRs) that operate in a delay jitter inducing best-effort network, like the current Internet. The developed system model is built around the Ek/Di/1/N phase-type queue and allows for the effective modeling of key design and system parameters, such as: the level of delay jitter, the performance metrics and the employed playout policy. The optimal playout policy is derived under k-Erlang interarrivals by formulating and solving an optimization problem. The (theoretical) optimal solution is transformed into an approximately optimal one that utilizes observable information and it is, thus, feasible. Numerical results are derived under the optimal policy and compared against those under the optimal policy that assumes a fixed level of jitter as determined by Poisson arrivals, as well as against the deterministic service that applies no playout adaptation. Based on this work, a PVR is proposed that adapts to varying network delay jitter and tries to induce a performance that approximates the derived theoretical optimal one. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...
متن کاملJitter Analysis of CBR Streams in Multimedia Networks
The performance of real time applications such as video and voice streams relies on packet delay jitter. Large delay jitter causes buffer overflow or underflow at the receiver end and the user encounters interrupts. The delay jitter is mainly due to the perturbation of background traffic in the bottleneck router. Fulton and Li 1121 provide an analytical approximation for the tirst-order and sec...
متن کاملNetwork Delay Jitter and Client Buffer Requirements in Distributed Video-on-Demand Systems
In this paper, we analyze the effects of delay jitter on receiver buffer requirements in distributed Videoon-Demand systems. We use a general purpose realtime producer-consumer model to describe the distributed architecture of a Video-on-Demand system. We prove a Theorem that states that the amount of data in the receiver buffer is linear in network delay jitter. We present necessary conditions...
متن کاملTraÆc Correlation on Clock Recovery in MPEG - 2 Systems Layer
We analyze the e ect of the correlation of the delay experienced by the packets of a video stream on the quality of the clock recovered by the receiver from the packet stream. For a general input process, we show that high correlation of the delay samples produces a large deviation of the recovered clock frequency even when the magnitude of the jitter is small. This shows that the correlation o...

Design of an Active Queue Management scheme at the Access Point to address the problem of congestion control, packet delay variation and packet loss rate is discussed. The proposed mechanism calculates and adjusts redundancy rate adaptively at the access point by considering both network traffic load and wireless channel condition. Real-time applications such as Mobile learning and smart learni...
